What typically carries over

The motor nameplate, load description, speed range, start and stop behavior, direction logic, reference source, braking method, and fault-reset philosophy usually remain the core engineering inputs. Existing SINAMICS parameter reports and terminal drawings can be retained as records of intent. They guide the review, but they are not copied into a target drive without reconciling its parameter model and hardware.

What needs re-engineering

Re-engineering covers motor identification, control mode, acceleration and deceleration behavior, current limits, digital and analog terminal logic, braking components, and fault handling. PROFINET or Siemens-specific telegrams must be redesigned around a supported target protocol such as Modbus or CANopen, with PLC words and diagnostics mapped again. Cabinet fit, cooling, EMC measures, upstream protection, and any safety-related stop chain require a fresh check. The retained PLC command sequence must be observed under normal stops, faults, and loss of communications. Parameter backups should be retained for commissioning records and later service review. The final terminal map should remain with the electrical drawings. Any proposed VFD is a candidate replacement — subject to engineering review.
