The motor data, load behavior, commanded speed range, start and stop sources, acceleration and braking intent, permissives, and fault-reset sequence remain valid engineering inputs. Existing Allen-Bradley drive parameters and wiring drawings can capture how the machine operates. They are not treated as equivalent settings for a target drive because parameter models, defaults, and terminal functions differ. Local controls, maintenance resets, process interlocks and operating ownership should also be documented before changing the drive.

What needs re-engineering

Re-engineering covers motor setup, control mode, digital and analog I/O, limits, braking components, restart behavior, and diagnostic outputs. EtherNet/IP assemblies, control words, datalinks, or controller integration must be rebuilt for a supported target protocol such as Modbus or CANopen. Mechanical fit, heat dissipation, EMC, protective devices, and the safety stop chain require fresh validation. The retained PLC sequence should be tested through running, stopping, fault reset, and loss of communications. The approved parameter set, terminal schedule, network mapping, and fault-response evidence should remain with the revised electrical documentation. Maintenance records should include the source configuration and target backup. Any proposed VFD is a candidate replacement — subject to engineering review.
