Category-level migration differences

What typically carries over

The existing functional specification, sequence narrative, I/O list, alarm philosophy, and standard IEC logic can remain useful as engineering references. Device names and operating states also provide a stable basis for rebuilding the application. A TIA Portal project, however, is reference material rather than an import source for CoDeSys or KincoBuilder, and the current hardware configuration must be documented before a migration path is assessed.

What needs re-engineering

Re-engineering covers tag and data-block structure, I/O addressing, Siemens-specific instructions and libraries, HMI links, and any PID or motion behavior. PROFINET-dependent devices require a new network plan around EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, or an appropriate protocol gateway; terminal layout and cabinet wiring are checked again. Safety functions and project certification remain separate validation work and are never inferred from a standard controller comparison. Commissioning tests must reproduce the documented operating states and fault responses before release. The revised hardware map and test evidence should remain with the machine documentation for future maintenance. Any proposed controller is a candidate replacement — subject to engineering review.

Migration effort

Migration effort is driven by project structure rather than controller count. Engineering reviews the original TIA Portal or STEP 7 project, tag database, data blocks, HMI references, Siemens-specific libraries, PID or motion logic, fieldbus devices, safety functions and commissioning access before defining scope. The work covers documenting the current project, rebuilding variables and I/O mapping in CoDeSys or KincoBuilder, re-implementing logic and HMI tags, reviewing PROFINET-dependent communications and validating the result on a bench before machine commissioning. Program logic. TIA Portal projects cannot be imported into KincoBuilder. Standard ladder maps roughly 1:1; Siemens-specific instructions and structured text require manual rewriting — quoted as a managed migration for large programs.

Fieldbus. PROFINET has no Kinco equivalent; migrations move to EtherCAT or Modbus TCP. Existing PROFINET devices need gateways or replacement — reviewed per network before commitment.

Wiring & footprint. Terminal layout and DIN-rail footprint differ from the S7-1200; field wiring is re-terminated and cabinet layout re-checked. Analog on the AK840M uses RP20 remote I/O.

Where it does not fit. High-performance S7-1500 rack, fail-safe F-CPUs, and distributed ET 200 architectures have no direct Kinco equivalent — these need manual engineering review, not a catalogue swap.
