What typically carries over

The machine sequence, I/O list, alarm conditions, interlocks, and IEC program intent can remain useful when moving from a Modicon controller. EcoStruxure Machine Expert or earlier project files can supply comments, variable names, and hardware context. Even where both environments use IEC languages, libraries, task behavior, addressing, and device configuration are not assumed to transfer unchanged into CoDeSys or KincoBuilder.

What needs re-engineering

Re-engineering covers variables and retained data, I/O and expansion modules, vendor-specific function blocks, HMI links, and any PID or motion behavior. An existing Modbus network may preserve its protocol concept, but register maps, roles, timing, and diagnostics still require validation; other Schneider dependencies may need EtherCAT, CANopen, or a gateway. Cabinet terminals and scan-sensitive sequences are tested again. Safety functions and project certification remain a separate scope. Startup, controlled stopping, and recovery behavior must match the reviewed machine narrative. The approved register map, task assumptions, and test record should remain with the controls documentation for future service.
