Siemens lifecycle information schedules the S7-1200 G1 PM400 milestone for 1 November 2026. New-part availability is expected for roughly one additional year, through late October or 1 November 2027 depending on channel interpretation, with spare-parts support planned into approximately 2036. The successor S7-1200 G2 is not hardware-compatible with the previous S7-1200 generation, so a G1 → G2 transition itself involves redesign work — making this a sensible moment to evaluate whether Kinco AK840M is a viable migration option for parts of the installed base.
Pick by application architecture — K615S for compact control, AK840M for EtherCAT motion
Kinco offers two distinct controller families targeting different Siemens segments. They are not interchangeable: K615S uses KincoBuilder, while AK840M is supplied as a CODESYS-based controller for architectural fit. Choose by the architecture your project actually requires — I/O scale, communication, motion, safety, and certifications. Commercial terms are confirmed at quotation.

What plugs straight in, what needs a gateway
Existing field devices, drives, and HMIs are the second-largest migration question. Most Modbus, EtherCAT, and CANopen equipment connects to AK840M / K615S with zero hardware changes; Profinet IO and Profibus DP need correctly selected protocol gateways. HMI reuse depends on the exact model, firmware, and driver set.
AK840M CPU has no native Profinet controller. Use a protocol gateway (HMS Anybus, Helmholz, Softing, etc.) selected for the correct master/slave behavior and target-side protocol. Alternatively, redesign remote I/O around EtherCAT or Modbus TCP where acceptable. Do not present remote-I/O couplers as native AK840M CPU Profinet-controller capability.
Native on both AK840M (2× Ethernet + 1× RS-485) and K615S (1× Ethernet + 2× RS-485). Siemens SINAMICS V20 (USS/Modbus), Weintek HMI, Kemron VFD, Inovance VFD, energy meters connect directly with mapping work.
No native Profibus master/slave on either controller. Use a correctly selected HMS Anybus / Helmholz / Softing / Procentec gateway based on whether the existing Profibus network requires master or slave behavior, and based on the target-side protocol selected for AK840M or K615S.
AK840M is a 32-axis EtherCAT master. Beckhoff EL-series, Maxon EPOS4, Schneider Lexium, Sanyo Denki RS3, Kinco FD1X5/S enumerate normally with proper ESI/EDS imported into CODESYS. Typical 1 ms cycle @ 8 axes E-Cam.
K615S has built-in CANopen master, 64 slaves, CiA 402. AK840M needs the optional BD20-CAN BD board. Tested with Maxon EPOS4, Schneider Lexium, Kinco FD-series.
Some Siemens Basic / KTP / Comfort / Unified panels can support Modbus TCP depending on the exact HMI model, generation, firmware, TIA Portal version, and available communication drivers. Do not assume either reuse outcome. Verify the exact MLFB and project configuration before migration. If Modbus TCP is not available or tag conversion is too costly, migrate the HMI to Kinco GL/F, Weintek, Pro-face, or another Modbus-capable panel.
No AS-i master on AK840M / K615S. Bihl+Wiedemann BWU AS-i / Modbus TCP gateway bridges the gap, or migrate AS-i topology to discrete I/O.
No native IO-Link on AK840M CPU. Use an EtherCAT IO-Link master (Beckhoff EL6224, Balluff BNI EtherCAT, etc.) downstream of the AK840M EtherCAT master. Function block libraries via CODESYS.
Six-step checklist for porting a Siemens project
Migration effort depends on Siemens libraries, motion, PID, HMI tag count, fieldbus architecture, safety, commissioning access, and documentation quality. The checklist identifies the work packages; project duration is scoped from the submitted files during engineering review and confirmed at quotation.
Export the Siemens project tag database
Export PLC tags, symbol tables, DB structures, hardware configuration, HMI tag tables, and network settings from the original Siemens project. The exact export path depends on TIA Portal / STEP 7 Micro/WIN SMART version and whether Openness is available. Capture symbol names, data types, and addresses (I/Q/M/V/DB). This is the foundation — most migration time is tag re-mapping.
Build equivalent CODESYS / KincoBuilder variable table
Map S7 absolute addresses (I0.0, Q0.0, M0.0, DB1.DBX0.0) to CODESYS structured variables (%IX0.0, %QX0.0, GVL.varName) for AK840M; or to Kinco V-memory + Modbus holding registers for K615S. The conversion-sheet scope is confirmed during BOM review.
Port ladder logic and function blocks
LAD ports rung-by-rung to LD with addressing rewrite. SCL must be rewritten as ST in CODESYS (manual — Siemens-specific syntax like "DB1".VAR doesn't carry over). S7-GRAPH must be rewritten as CODESYS SFC. Built-in Siemens functions (SCALE_X, NORM_X) have direct CODESYS equivalents but may need re-tuning for the new platform.
Re-scale analog inputs and PID parameters
Siemens uses 0–27648 normalized integer for 0–10 V or 0–20 mA; 4–20 mA range maps to ~5530–27648. Kinco K-series uses transparent ×0.001 scaling (4000 ↔ 4.000 mA, 20000 ↔ 20.000 mA) — no NORM_X step needed. PID Kp/Ti/Td parameter formats differ; copy-paste values do not work — re-tune.
Update HMI driver and tag references
If retaining a Comfort/Unified panel, switch the HMI driver from S7 to Modbus TCP via WinCC and re-import tags — verify the panel actually supports Modbus TCP at its firmware/driver level first. Or migrate the HMI to Kinco DTools / Weintek EasyBuilder. Recheck every screen for tag binding.
Bench commissioning and runtime validation
Bench-test on a wired mockup with real I/O before the machine swap. Document any deviations from S7 timing for the operator team. Motion-heavy AK840M projects with EtherCAT axes require axis tuning and CAM configuration to be included in the engineering scope.
Engineering duration is application-dependent. The scope and timing are confirmed at quotation after review of the Siemens project, HMI, network architecture, safety functions, and commissioning access.
Suggested: Screen-recording walkthrough of the 6-step migration on a real bench setup. Open with TIA Portal export → CODESYS variable table import (2× speed) → ladder rung translation comparison → analog re-scaling → HMI driver swap on a Weintek panel → bench commissioning with terminal block. Voiceover in EN, captions burned in. Embed as <video poster="…" preload="metadata"> with a poster-frame still. Host on Cloudflare Stream or similar; lazy-load.
Where Siemens still wins — and what we recommend instead
We sell what works. We don't sell what doesn't. Here are five Siemens application categories where Kinco is not a substitute, and what we recommend you do with each.
- TÜV-certified Profisafe Safety Integrated (SIL 3 / PL e). Siemens S7-1200F / S7-1500F with Profisafe over Profinet is a TÜV-certified end-to-end safety architecture programmed in STEP 7 Safety. Kinco does not currently publish a TÜV-certified safety variant — the AK840M datasheet lists only CE per EN/IEC 61000-6-2. For SIL 2/3 or PL d/e, integrate Pilz PNOZmulti / Sick Flexi-Soft / Siemens 3SK as a downstream safety controller, or stay on Siemens.
- Native Profinet IO controller architecture. S7-1200 / S7-1500 with built-in Profinet IO controller speaks RT 1–10 ms / IRT 250 µs–1 ms to ET 200SP, Festo CPX, Murr MVK, SMC EX600. AK840M has no native Profinet controller — Profinet IO must be reached via a correctly selected protocol gateway, or remote I/O is redesigned around EtherCAT or Modbus TCP. If a native Profinet IO controller is mandatory by project requirements, Siemens or another Profinet-controller platform remains the lower-friction choice.
- S7-1500T tightly-integrated motion + drives ecosystem. AK840M is a strong EtherCAT motion controller for cost-sensitive multi-axis applications, but it is not a substitute for the Siemens S7-1500T / SINAMICS / Profisafe ecosystem where certified safety motion (SafeMotion / Safe Stop with Profisafe at SIL 3 / PL e), Siemens drive integration, and TIA-based diagnostics are mandatory.
- Hazardous-area Class I Div 2 / ATEX Zone 2 installations. Siemens S7-1200 carries FM, ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 on specific SKUs, plus IM-RAIL intrinsic-safety variants on S7-1500. No public FM, ATEX, IECEx, UL 508, or KC certificates were found in the reviewed public AK840M documents. Verify the latest certificate status directly with Kinco before using the AK840M in regulated North American, hazardous-area, or export-controlled panels. For oil & gas, chemical, grain-dust, or any rated hazardous-area application, Siemens or Phoenix Contact AXC F intrinsic-safety variants are the right call.
- Existing Profibus DP-only field networks with no migration budget. Kinco does not have native Profibus DP master or slave. A correctly selected gateway works (HMS Anybus, Helmholz, Softing, Procentec), but if Profibus DP is the architectural backbone and replacing it isn't planned, Siemens remains the lower-friction choice for the controller swap.
Engineer-to-engineer answers

When is the Siemens S7-1200 G1 being discontinued?
Siemens lifecycle information schedules the S7-1200 G1 phase-out / PM400 milestone for 1 November 2026. New-part availability is expected for roughly one additional year, through late October or 1 November 2027 depending on channel interpretation, with spare-parts support planned into approximately 2036.
The successor S7-1200 G2 was launched December 2024 and is not hardware-compatible with the previous S7-1200 generation, so a G1 → G2 transition itself involves redesign work — making this a sensible moment to evaluate whether Kinco AK840M is a viable migration option for parts of the installed base.
Can Kinco AK840M replace Siemens S7-1200 1214C in selected applications?
The AK840M-0808DTN can be evaluated as a candidate replacement — subject to engineering review for selected S7-1200 1214C applications, especially where Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherCAT motion, and CODESYS programming are acceptable. Terminal layout, I/O count, HMI tags, network architecture, and program logic must be reviewed.
It is not a native Profinet IO controller and should not be used as a replacement for Profisafe / safety-rated Siemens architectures.
What software programs the Kinco AK840M?
The AK840M is supplied as a CODESYS-based controller and is programmed with CODESYS V3.5. Confirm the current Kinco device package, runtime terms, hardware revision, and firmware during engineering review.
KincoBuilder does not program the AK-series — it is for the K-series (K615S, K6S) only.
Does the AK840M support Profinet?
The AK840M CPU does not have a native Profinet IO controller port. Its two Ethernet ports support Modbus TCP master/slave. To exchange data with existing Profinet IO devices, a protocol gateway (HMS Anybus, Helmholz, Softing, etc.) selected for the correct master/slave behavior and target-side protocol is required, or remote I/O is redesigned around EtherCAT or Modbus TCP.
If a native Profinet IO controller is mandatory by project requirements, Siemens or another Profinet-controller platform remains the lower-friction choice.
How does Kinco K615S compare to Siemens S7-200 SMART?
The K615S-16DT is a functional migration option for selected S7-200 SMART CR40 / SR40 / ST40 compact-control installations, mainly seen in emerging markets where the S7-200 SMART is widely deployed. It offers comparable I/O scale, native CANopen master (which the S7-200 SMART lacks), faster Ethernet plus dual RS-485, and four high-speed counters at up to 200 kHz.
Confirm the current KincoBuilder and STEP 7 Micro/WIN SMART versions and license terms against manufacturer documentation. Hardware pricing is confirmed at quotation.
What is the engineering software cost difference between TIA Portal and CODESYS / KincoBuilder?
The comparison depends on the required Siemens edition, add-on licenses, CODESYS runtime or device package, hardware revision, firmware, region, and commercial terms.

Does Kinco have a SIL 3 / PL e Safety Integrated equivalent to Siemens Profisafe?
No. Kinco does not currently publish a TÜV-certified safety variant equivalent to Siemens S7-1200F or S7-1500F with Profisafe (SIL 3 per IEC 61508, PL e per ISO 13849-1). The AK840M public datasheet lists only CE per EN/IEC 61000-6-2:2019.
For SIL 2/3 or PL d/e applications, integrate a dedicated downstream safety controller (Pilz PNOZmulti, Sick Flexi-Soft, Siemens 3SK) or stay on Siemens. We will not sell what doesn't fit a safety requirement.
Is the Kinco AK840M EtherCAT master compatible with Beckhoff EL-series I/O?
Yes. The AK840M is an EtherCAT master supporting up to 32 synchronized axes, with typical 1 ms cycle at 8-axis E-Cam configurations. Beckhoff EL-series slaves and any third-party EtherCAT slave conforming to the standard (Maxon EPOS4, Schneider Lexium, Sanyo Denki, Kinco FD1X5/S, etc.) can enumerate normally with proper EDS/ESI files imported into CODESYS.
How long does it take to migrate a Siemens program to KincoBuilder or CODESYS?
A simple discrete-control migration can often be estimated in engineering days, but no fixed number should be assumed without reviewing the original Siemens project. The key effort drivers are tag count, DB structure, HMI screens, Siemens-specific libraries, PID, motion, safety, fieldbus devices, and commissioning access.
Project timing is scoped during engineering review and confirmed at quotation.
Can a Siemens STEP 7 / TIA Portal program be automatically converted to Kinco?
No reliable one-click conversion should be assumed. Siemens LAD/FBD/SCL projects can be used as engineering references, but the logic, tags, DB structures, communication blocks, HMI links, and hardware configuration must be rebuilt or re-mapped in CODESYS for AK840M or KincoBuilder for K615S.
Simple ladder projects are usually the easiest to port. Siemens-specific libraries, SCL syntax, GRAPH/SFC sequences, PID loops, motion blocks, safety logic, and proprietary communication functions require manual engineering review.
Can I keep my Siemens HMI when I migrate to a Kinco PLC?
It depends on the exact Siemens HMI model, generation, firmware, TIA Portal version, and available communication drivers. Some Siemens Basic, KTP, Comfort, and Unified panels can communicate via Modbus TCP, while other projects may be locked to Siemens-specific drivers, old firmware, or tag structures that make reuse uneconomical.
Before deciding, verify the HMI MLFB, firmware image, available WinCC communication drivers, tag count, alarm configuration, recipe / data-log requirements, and whether Modbus TCP or another open protocol can be configured. If reuse is not practical, migrate the HMI to a Modbus-capable Kinco GL/F, Weintek, Pro-face, or similar panel.
Does Kinco support Profibus DP?
No. The AK840M and K615S do not have a native Profibus DP master or slave port. For installations where Profibus DP is the architectural backbone, a correctly selected HMS Anybus / Helmholz / Softing / Procentec gateway is required based on whether the existing network needs master or slave behavior, and based on the target-side protocol.
If Profibus DP is non-negotiable and budget for gateways isn't available, Siemens remains the lower-friction choice for the controller swap.
When should I stay with Siemens instead of migrating to Kinco?
Stay with Siemens when the machine depends on native Profinet IO, Profisafe, S7-1200F / S7-1500F safety, S7-1500T motion, SINAMICS diagnostics, UL / ATEX / FM-certified panel requirements, Siemens-only HMI / SCADA integration, or a validated OEM standard that does not allow controller changes.
Kinco is more suitable where the project can be re-engineered around Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherCAT, CANopen, compact I/O, cost-sensitive hardware, and open programming workflows.
